Roller derby is a full-contact sport played on an oval track; the object of the game is to score as many points as possible by lapping opposing team skaters on the track. It is a game of skill and endurance and has many strategies, rules, contact and penalties!
Each roller derby game played by two teams and is split into two half hour sessions (‘Periods’). It consists of multiple <2 min ‘Jams’ which are the times in which teams attempt to score points. These jams are split by 30 second intervals during which the players on track may rotate before the new jam.
There are 14 players per team on a roster and 5 players for each team on track per Jam: one ‘Jammer’, one ‘Pivot’ and three ‘Blockers’. The pivot & blockers (defensive players) from each team skate together on the track to form a ‘Pack’ and the jammer (the point scorer) must race through the pack to gain position as ‘lead jammer’ to take control of the game then go on to score points by lapping the pack as many times as possible. The jam ends when the two minute period is over or the lead jammer calls off the jam.
